For Cats in Kidney Failure Understanding the Tests For Cats in Kidney Failure

Cat & The first signs of kidney failure. Can they be wrong?

My husband and I adopted a 9 year old cat a way shelter a little over two weeks. He took her to the vet on Monday and housing records show that in 2007, showed the first signs of kidney failure. She was treated for a urinary tract infection and, as I understand, everything was fine. Could have been wrong about the first signs of kidney failure and / or veterinarian must give a blood test to confirm this? We've only had it for a couple of weeks, so I'm not sure how much weight he lost. She is drinking water .. again, not sure how much. Is there some way of measuring how much alcohol and how much? Also, she may have roundworm and we are doing a fecal test this week for the diagnosis and treatment.

As Ken said, the values of the kidney can be elevated for reasons other than renal failure. The only way you will know for sure is to run more blood tests. It's been long enough now that the values should show whether your kidneys are in decline, or if what might have caused the elevated happened. In my opinion, knowing that it's worth the extra expense of testing. Not knowing is very difficult emotionally, and if you know, you can work with the vet to get her on the best diet possible for the kidneys fail. If the vet suggests KD (he or she almost no doubt), ask about the manufacture or purchase of a raw diet instead. In my opinion, Hill is not all that cracked to be. From his previous post was a roundworm possible, I would be concerned about the health of this cat. Roundworm infections in this phase are almost unknown in health, adult cats. Usually they are less entrenched that the cat is pregnant, unhealthy, or very stressful. Elevated kidney values along with a hookworm infection would be indicative of health very poor. I hope this is not the case. Good luck.
