Canescens Penstemmon
Family Scrophulariaceae - Snapdragon
This Penstemon particular, is a transplant of nature. In the forests of southeastern Indiana this wild flower lights the summer forest with pink flowers. Cuttings taken in summer rooted in mist in the greenhouse as a result an excellent addition to the garden perennial flowers.

Beardtongue is native to southern Indiana and southern Pennsylvania. The guides say wildflower Penstemon occurs mainly in the mountains, but is here in the mountainous terrain of the southern part of the state. In the perennial garden that grows a little higher than in the wild and is far more generous in bloom. It receives about three feet tall and blooms from early June to mid July. Bloom is sometimes sporadically after that, if deadheaded.

From beardtongue is a flower of the forest, he will do better in partial shade to shade in most garden perennials. It seems to flourish more in a sunnier place, but the plants will be shorter duration. There are about 250 varieties of penstemons in this family. One of them is Asian, the rest are from North America. Most species are in the western United States.

Penstemon Propagation is from seed or cuttings taken in autumn or late summer. The seeds of the wild species can be planted and will come true. Hybrids do not come true from seed. Division of some species can also be done in the spring.

The Penstemon is a native American wildflower that can easily make the transition to the perennial garden. Also called beardtongues, these flowers illuminate the beautiful summer garden in the shade of pink, white or lavender flowers.
